The Madeira Island Ultra-Trail (MIUT) is a trail running event on the Portuguese island of Madeira, with several distances to choose from. I ran the 42 km race; other options include 16 km, 56 km, 80 km and 110 km. The course is tough - lots of elevation change - and the terrain is incredibly varied: dense jungle one moment and exposed cliffs with the ocean to the side the next. It was amazing.

Background

MIUT has grown into one of the standout ultra-trail events in Europe. The island's geography makes for a unique race: you get lush, almost tropical trail in the interior and dramatic coastal sections where the path runs along cliffs above the Atlantic. The mix of jungle and ocean, plus the vertical gain, keeps the 42 km feeling long and full. One of my favourite aspects was how the scenery kept changing - from shaded, humid forest to open, windy ridges with huge views.

Our trip

We were a big group travelling together - around 15 of us - which made the whole thing feel like a running trip with friends rather than just a race. We stayed at Hotel Vila Galé Santa Cruz, which worked well as a base: close enough to the action, with space for the whole group and easy logistics for race day. Booking ahead is a good idea, especially around the event.

We had a few days to explore the island before and after the race. I primarily explored Funchal - the capital is compact, lively and easy to walk around, with a nice waterfront, old town and the famous market. Well worth a morning or an afternoon if you have time.

The trail

The 42 km route served up everything I'd hoped for from a Madeira race. The elevation change is serious; you're either climbing or descending for most of the day. The trail itself is varied: in the interior you're in dense, green jungle - narrow paths, roots, humidity - and then you pop out onto exposed cliffs with the ocean right beside you. That contrast, from enclosed forest to open, airy ridges, is what makes MIUT special. The organisation was solid, with clear marking and aid stations where you need them.

The ultra community

The ultra community at MIUT was awesome and friendly. Everyone from volunteers to other runners helped create a really good vibe - encouraging at the checkpoints, chatty on the course, and up for a beer and a story afterwards. That atmosphere is a big part of why I'd go back. If you like trail running and want an event that feels welcoming as well as challenging, MIUT is a great fit.

Final thoughts

MIUT was a great experience. It offered tough terrain, plenty of elevation, and scenery that switched between jungle and ocean cliffs. The 42 km was enough for me this time, but the 56, 80 and 110 km options are there if you want more. With a big group, a good hotel base and a few days in Funchal, it made for a perfect running trip. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
